Sign Regulations

  • Signs must be visible and clearly indicate by text and picture the smoking status of the establishment.
  • Non-smoking establishments must post a sign with the text “NO SMOKING”.  Text should be in capital letters, set out on a contrasting background and clearly legible. The sign must have a total surface area of not less than 520 cm and minimum dimensions of 20 cm by 26 cm.
  •  Areas that are smoking establishments will be required to post signs at every entrance. The signs must have the text “SMOKING PERMITTED” and “NO PERSONS UNDER 18 PERMITTED.” Text should be in capital letters, set out on a contrasting background and clearly legible. The sign must have a total surface area of not less than 520 cm2 and minimum dimensions of 20 cm by 26 cm.   Sign must be accompanied by the international smoking symbol.
  • Non-smoking work vehicles such as taxis and public transit will be required to post signs that are visible to those entering.  The signs must have the text “NO SMOKING”. Text should be in capital letters, set out on a contrasting background and clearly legible. The sign must have a total surface area of not less than 100 cmand minimum dimensions of 10 cm by 10 cm.
  • Work vehicles that permit smoking will be required to post signs that are visible to those entering. The signs must have the text “SMOKING PERMITTED” and “NO PERSONS UNDER 18 PERMITTED”. Text should be in capital letters, set out on a contrasting background and clearly legible. The sign must have a total surface area of not less than 100 cm and minimum dimensions of 10 cm by 10 cm.
  • Only an owner/operator may hang, move or remove a sign indicating the status of the establishment in accordance with the Act and it’s regulations.
  • Anyone caught contravening sign regulations will be fined $250.
